Canada's extremely diverse and largely provincially segmented electricity market is undergoing significant change. Factors such as transmission and distribution constraints, resource availability and costs and technological advances are shaping our current and future needs. Furthermore, continued emphasis on conservation and clean energy programs have changed the way we consume energy and the type of energy we demand for the future. Strategies for increased renewable energy procurement, nuclear refurbishment, enhanced regional planning with respect to energy infrastructure and mitigating increases in electricity rates have been and continue to be the focus of provincial governments, including the Government of Ontario. Substantial investment in these sectors will be essential, creating new opportunities for Canadian and international power and transmission developers, related industries and their customers.
