Summary: Your company is interested in doing business in Canada. But where does it start? Does the company need a Canadian subsidiary or a permanent establishment in Canada? Or should it operate from abroad as a non-resident? Who should act as the importer? How should the sale transaction be structured to minimize customs duties and ensure compliance? Should the company outsource part of the work to service providers (e.g. customs brokers, freight forwarders or warehouses)? What are the tax implications of these decisions? In this session, Darrel Pearson and Laura Murray from Bennett Jones LLP will provide an overview of the threshold issues that should be considered before a business begins importing products into Canada and discuss strategies for structuring your business model to maximize efficiency, streamline costs and avoid compliance issues down the line.
