Grant Stapon is the co-head of the wills & estates litigation group in the firm's Calgary office and is the former head of the commercial litigation group. He acts for energy companies, insurance companies, media organizations, tech companies, individual executives and the Calgary Police Service.
Grant is experienced in corporate/commercial, intellectual property, securities, media, oil and gas, insurance, environmental, occupational health and safety litigation and arbitration. He also has an employment and labour law practice. Grant advises several public company boards on governance issues, and has appeared before various boards, courts and tribunals in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland.
In addition to his corporate litigation practice, Grant has been defence counsel in many of the largest environmental cases in Alberta including the Little Buffalo Kemp spill, the Red Deer River Gleniffer Lake spill, the Seal Condensate spill, the OBED dam failure, the Medicine Hat / Suffield migratory birds case, as well as several other significant environmental cases still under investigation or in trial proceedings.
Grant has been external counsel to the Calgary Police Service for over 35 years having advised 7 Chiefs of Police, several of whom have remained his clients after their retirement.
Grant has over 100 reported decisions from various courts and tribunals. He sits on several corporate boards and he has lectured and written on the law frequently. He is also a member of various community and charitable organizations.
