There is a global imperative to combat climate change. There is collective will to mitigate and adapt to the impacts—and those climate impacts have the greatest effect on vulnerable populations, including Indigenous peoples within Canada. Mining and extractive industries are important in the production of new technologies as we shift to a green economy. Innovative funding models will be required to create sustainable business models.
Indigenous participation in the mining industry is both a shifting Canadian and global paradigm, and it has been recognized that involvement of Indigenous communities is becoming increasingly vital to all aspects of the mining industry.
The panel explores several aspects related to Indigenous participation, including:
- how Indigenous participation can improve the exploration activities and operations of mining projects;
- how including Indigenous in ESG thinking can increase the competitiveness of a project and de-risk its objectives;
- how innovative funding models can increase financing of green focused development projects in Indigenous communities and
- how Indigenous knowledge and participation will be fundamental to reaching the goals of Paris 2050.
