Michael Eizenga speaks to Law.com about the resolution of a decades-long Canadian class action dispute, culminating in a C$32.5 billion agreement with the tobacco industry. The resolution, approved on March 6, 2025, is the largest of its kind in Canadian history—and third largest globally—will compensate injured smokers, recover healthcare costs for governments and fund tobacco-related health research.
Speaking of the settlement, Mike says that while there is still much work to do, getting to this point is a “monumental achievement” after many legal battles and that “it's been very challenging [and] extremely hard-fought.”
