Alex Payne is a lawyer specializing in complex, high-stakes disputes. Alex takes a practical approach to litigation, working hard to understand how litigation fits into clients’ broader business objectives, in order to target the most efficient route to an appropriate resolution, whether through negotiated settlement or vigorous advocacy before courts and tribunals.
Alex carries on a diverse commercial litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution practice, representing clients on a range of matters including class actions, product liability claims, shareholder disputes, contractual disputes, construction lien litigation and professional negligence claims. Alex has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and Divisional Court, as well as the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
Alex has significant experience handling the e-discovery and record management challenges of modern litigation. Alex competently uses litigation tools and technology, including AI, to navigate the complexity (and control the associated costs) of modern e-discovery.
In 2021, shortly after acting as counsel on a complex, high-stakes, fully electronic four-month trial on the Commercial List of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Alex was named “One to Watch” in Corporate and Commercial Litigation by Best Lawyers in Canada.
Prior to joining Bennett Jones, Alex completed his J.D. at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he won several awards for oral advocacy. Alex is a member of the Toronto Lawyers Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and the Advocates' Society.
